Chapter Success Story: NIE IEEE Computer Society Student Branch Chapter

POSTED BY on 09.19.2017

The NIE IEEE Student Branch Chapter of the Computer Society started three years ago with just 15 members and has grown to serve more than 60 students from The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore.

With the mission to create a community of technology enthusiasts on campus, the NIE IEEE Student Branch Chapter serves not only the membership through events and meetups, but also the broader community by providing basic computer education to under-privileged children in collaboration with Divya Deepa Charitable Trust, which provides accommodation, food, clothing, medical care free of cost, and educational opportunities to at-risk children. The student-volunteers worked with the kids (ranging between 6 and 14 years old) to design age- and skill-appropriate activities to teach the use of Microsoft Office.

The project illustrates how IEEE’s Student Chapters can build upon their knowledge and partner with the non-governmental sector and the broader public improve their communities.  Divya Deepa volunteer Ashwin explained, “The NIE IEEE Computer Society Student Chapter is our best source of volunteers. Every time they come to our place with a completely new, innovative way of making the kids understand the concepts. They plan to make projects which would serve as effective educating tools, customized to the needs of these kids. We are very delightful to have them as a part of our family and the kids have made remarkable progress in the field of computers since the volunteers started to contribute to our NGO (non-governmental organization).”

When the members of NIE IEEE Student Branch Chapter aren’t out making the world a better place, they are seeking to advance the skills of their members through basic programming sessions for freshmen, talks on FOSS (given by a student who had participated in the Google Summer of Code), a workshop on Competitive Coding, and a coding boot camp for girls to celebrate International Women’s Day.

NIE Student Chapter Chair Arpana Debnath says, “We hope to keep growing and continuing to make a change in the world through technology.” How can they not with such great leadership and volunteers? Debnath further notes, “We plan to make our chapter bigger and better by starting off an Advanced Tech Sessions Project Drive (for pre-final and final year members) and Research Observation Group.”

We, at IEEE, are excited by the Chapter’s growth and community involvement and see a great future for these students.
